New cellulose-based materials. Benefits for low waste generation

In the increasing global competition, there is a growing need to develop more efficient and agile processes in order to secure competitiveness. On the other hand, the global consumer demand is rising for greener, more customizable and higher quality products. Novum addresses these demands by utilizing renewable cellulose-based raw materials and manufacturing methods, such as 3D printing, that offer unlimited customization properties while producing little to no waste. This industry-driven European project aims to develop a new manufacturing concept for electrical insulation components with 10 partners from several steps along the value chain. It could change the way in which power transformers are produced, and lead to the transition from the current manual production to automated production lines with increased resource and energy efficiency. Indeed, the NOVUM concept is expected to result in 60% decrease in waste generation compared to the existing manufacturing process. The benefits for lower waste generation are numerous: reducing the use of energy and materials in production will lead to cost savings, thus higher competitiveness, easier compliance with regulations, standards and policies targets and be the sign of proactive and sustainable approach towards the environmental protection. The introduction of novel processing for cellulose-based materials promoting the utilization of renewable and abundant bio-based raw material as cellulose can revolutionize the way in which power transformers are designed and produced as well as any new cellulose-based products designed for other applications as packaging or filtration.
